JiJieHao stun Spirit on Esports World Cup opening day: the upset nobody saw coming
The Esports World Cup didn't need a full day to produce its first headline. JiJieHao beat Spirit 13-10 on Mirage in the Group A opening round, sending one of the biggest favorites to the lower bracket in their very first match and delivering the loudest surprise of the Paris opener.
To grasp what happened, just look at the pre-match odds: Spirit sat around 1.05, while JiJieHao's price hovered near 7.80 or higher. The Chinese side, who arrived via the Last Chance Qualifier, have earned roughly $154,000 as an organization across their entire history — a figure some top-tier players collect from a single tournament placement.
How it unraveled
The format helped, and that's worth saying: the opening round is played as a best-of-one, the scenario where an underdog gets its only real shot. After the veto — JiJieHao removed Nuke and Dust2, Spirit banned Inferno, Ancient, and Cache — the series came down to Mirage.
The first half was a toe-to-toe contest that ended 6-6, with donk carrying his side as usual. But after the switch, JiJieHao took control and won the second half 7-4. One of the defining moments came in the second pistol round, with a sinnopsyy triple kill that flipped the script.

On Spirit's side, the most painful statistic isn't the scoreline. sh1ro recorded his worst map rating in 18 months: a 0.52. For an AWPer of his caliber, that's a hard number to explain.
donk, by contrast, held up his end. He was the match's best player despite the defeat, with 23 kills, 93.2 ADR, and a 1.58 rating. That figure illustrates the underlying problem: when the Russian performs and the team loses anyway, the spotlight shifts to everyone else.
Not the end of the world, but not a good omen
Some perspective is due. The group stage is double elimination, so Spirit aren't out: they drop to the lower bracket with their chances of reaching the top four intact. One slip in a best-of-one doesn't define a tournament.
But the context doesn't help. Spirit arrive in Paris having lost the BLAST Bounty final to MOUZ, in a series where donk strung together his fifth consecutive map with a negative K/D — unprecedented in his career. Two blows in two weeks start to form a pattern, and the forums are already running "Spirit is over" with more conviction than a single lost map warrants.
For JiJieHao, meanwhile, the night is historic without caveats. The team that earned its spot by beating DENDELE, Phantom, and HOTU in three consecutive three-map series has just taken down the world's best team on debut. And in doing so, reminded everyone why an opening-round best-of-one remains the neutral fan's best friend.
