HEROIC advance unbeaten as BC.Game edge closer to s1mple's Esports World Cup debut
The opening day of the Esports World Cup 2026 Last Chance Qualifier has already begun separating contenders from the pack in Paris, and two of the bracket's most-watched names delivered: HEROIC and BC.Game are through to the playoffs.
With 64 teams fighting for just four spots at the main event — $2,000,000 from August 12 to 23 — clearing the group stage guarantees nothing, but it keeps the dream alive.
HEROIC, without dropping a series
Antonio "MartinezSa" Martinez's team produced exactly the start they needed. HEROIC opened their Group 7 campaign with a comfortable 2-0 over REM before facing 9INE in the winners' match, where they had to work considerably harder: they came through 2-1 to top the group and book their playoff spot without losing a series.
It's significant news for the project led by doto, made up of Brollan, nilo, susp, MartinezSa, and Chr1zN. After winning Stake Ranked in Barcelona in their first tournament together, HEROIC arrived in Paris as an in-form side but facing the toughest test of their short life together. So far, they're answering.
Those knocked into the lower path still have hope: 9INE will fight for the second spot in the decider against ABT, who eliminated REM 2-0.
BC.Game and s1mple's outstanding appointment
The other qualifier drawing attention is BC.Game, the superteam built around Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev alongside electroNic, Magisk, Senzu, and mzinho. Their progression keeps alive a storyline with more weight than it first appears.
Because here's a detail that surprises many: s1mple has never competed at the Esports World Cup. One of the greatest players in Counter-Strike history has never set foot at the event, so if BC.Game claim one of the four spots, it would be his outright debut in the competition.
For a project that began by winning the Elisa Esports Breakout against modest opposition, this qualifier is the first genuinely serious test. So far, they've cleared the first hurdle.
Who else advanced and who's fighting today
Alongside those two, BIG (winners of Group 2 without dropping a map, via two 2-0s over z to forward and Fluxo), Inner Circle (an identical record in Group 1 against NIO and ASTRAL), DENDELE (2-0 over QueenConso and SAW in Group 3), Betclic, and fnatic have all secured playoff places.
Today will be decisive for several heavyweights who have yet to secure anything: Liquid, 100 Thieves, NRG, and Virtus.pro remain alive but face must-win matches. Groups 1 through 8 close out their deciders today, while groups 9 through 16 still have winners', elimination, and decider matches ahead.
What comes next
Once the group stage wraps up, the 32 survivors — two from each group — enter a single-elimination bracket where one defeat ends the run. Every match, from start to finish, is a best-of-three.
Only four teams will leave Paris with a ticket. There is financial consolation for those who fall short, though: the qualifier's $100,000 prize pool is distributed among the teams finishing between fifth and sixteenth. And there's another incentive that carries equal or greater weight: the event is VRS-eligible, so every win here counts toward November's Singapore Major.
