jL finds a place at the world's best: he'll stand in for Vitality at two events

The summer's most sought-after free agent has a destination, even if it's temporary. Vitality have officially confirmed that Justinas "jL" Lekavicius will join the team as a stand-in for two tournaments, covering two very particular absences: those of William "mezii" Merriman and Dan "apEX" Madesclaire, who are both becoming fathers.

The schedule is set. jL will debut in a Vitality jersey at BLAST Open Porto in late August, taking mezii's place. He'll then return in October for PGL Masters Bucharest, this time covering for apEX. The announcement, published on August 4, confirms what journalist Sébastien "KRL" Pérez had reported days earlier.

The trickiest gap: who will call the game

The two stand-in stints aren't equivalent, and that's where it gets interesting. Replacing mezii means a relatively conventional adjustment to the rifle roles. But replacing apEX means taking away the team's long-standing in-game leader.

Vitality haven't announced who will shoulder that responsibility in Bucharest, and it's the move's biggest unknown. Forums point to flameZ as the natural candidate given his vocal profile, though nothing is confirmed. The likeliest scenario, per community discussion, is that whoever calls will simply maintain apEX's system rather than reinvent it.

The two lineups would look like this: in Porto, apEX, ropz, ZywOo, flameZ, and jL; in Bucharest, mezii, ropz, ZywOo, flameZ, and jL.

A chance to relaunch

For the Lithuanian, the deal is exactly what he needed. jL became a free agent on July 1 when his Natus Vincere contract expired, ending three years at the club, and he'd spent weeks watching doors close: MOUZ signed PR and BC.Game publicly ruled him out. His 2026 has been limited to scattered appearances — a loan spell at MOUZ with two third-place finishes and a brief stand-in role at Liquid — with a modest 1.06 rating.

Now the 2024 Copenhagen Major MVP returns to a top-tier shop window. The player himself framed it honestly in the announcement: he accepts he can't be mezii or apEX, but promises to arrive as mechanically prepared as possible, and noted that with ZywOo on the team there's always a shot at a trophy. His stated goal is to win a tournament — with luck, two.

Vitality, for their part, welcomed him by highlighting that another Major MVP joins the roster.

Vitality at their lowest in two years

The signing also arrives at a delicate moment for the French side, which raises the stakes. After stringing together five consecutive titles earlier this year, Vitality have now gone three straight events without a top-four finish. The latest blow was especially harsh: they were knocked out of BLAST Bounty Season 2 by Liquid 0-2, without even reaching the Malta offline stage.

That stumble broke an extraordinary run: the team hadn't finished outside an event's top eight since IEM Katowice 2024 — more than 900 days of elite consistency.

So the question cuts both ways. If Vitality rediscover their level with jL in the lineup, the Lithuanian will have the perfect showcase to land a permanent home. And if they don't, the conversation about the end of the Vitality era — already circulating on the forums — will get considerably louder.
