FACEIT Season 9 is live: how its AI anti-cheat actually works

FACEIT Season 9 began on August 5 and, with it, Human Input Detection — the machine-learning layer that catches cheaters by how they play rather than by the software they run. Now that it's operational, it's worth going through the technical details the platform has clarified, because they address the three big concerns the community raised when it was announced.

 

Concern 1: is my computer being spied on?

It's the most repeated question, and FACEIT's answer is specific. The system only reads inputs inside the game window. It doesn't collect data from outside Counter-Strike, doesn't examine other programs or the rest of your system. What's more, the captured data is encrypted and not retained once the player leaves the game.

One important nuance worth clarifying: while it requires no additional download, Human Input Detection runs inside the FACEIT anti-cheat client you already had installed, not as an external service. That is, it adds no new software to your machine, but it isn't purely remote analysis either. And according to the platform, it has no noticeable impact on FPS or overall performance.

 

Concern 2: what if I play unusually?

The second worry affects players with extreme setups or atypical peripherals, and here FACEIT has been explicit: legitimate hardware, including accessibility devices, is part of what the model learns as normal human play. Non-standard controllers shouldn't trigger sanctions.

The key is that any unusual pattern coming from uncommon hardware is weighed alongside the rest of the anti-cheat's signals, never in isolation. The system doesn't rule on its own.

 

Concern 3: will a good play get me banned?

No — and this is the point most worth understanding. No sanction is triggered by a Human Input Detection flag alone. The system contributes one more signal that FACEIT's integrity systems weigh alongside all other data, and multiple corroborating signals are needed before a ban is confirmed.

There's also an interesting tactical detail: the platform acknowledges it sometimes deliberately delays ban waves to block large numbers of accounts at once, making it harder for cheat developers to work out what caught them and adapt their tools. Translated: not seeing immediate bans doesn't mean the system isn't working.

 

How it learns

The model was trained on data from millions of matches, including those of Counter-Strike's highest-ranked players, to build a reference for how a person actually moves, aims, and shoots. And it keeps learning with every match played.

Its priority targets are AI and DMA cheats, which by May already accounted for 40% of all cheating bans on the platform and are nearly invisible to traditional signature-based systems. According to FACEIT, in internal testing it proved especially effective against AI-based cheats specifically.

 

The context: an unprecedented crackdown

Human Input Detection doesn't arrive alone. It lands at the end of one of the most aggressive enforcement weeks in the platform's history: on July 27, FACEIT sanctioned 12,478 accounts for smurfing and multi-accounting using newly automated detection methods, for a total of 13,644 penalties that day. For scale, the platform's typical volume runs between 300 and 900 accounts daily — this was 15 to 45 times normal.

On top of that comes the rest of the Season 9 package, now active: five-year cheating bans, six months for stream sniping, the personalized soft Elo reset with ten placement matches, Vertigo as the community-voted optional map, and the half-time voice chat experiment, available until August 12.

 

What's left to see

The community has largely welcomed the system with optimism — creators like Thour have voiced hopes that Valve takes note — but the real test starts now. Over the coming weeks we'll see whether the model delivers on its promise against the most sophisticated cheats and, above all, whether the false positives some fear start to surface.

In the meantime, the contrast remains FACEIT's strongest argument: the platform explains in detail how its detection works, while Valve maintains its usual silence despite recent signs from VAC Live.
