Valve fixes grenades going through walls and removes a Cache boost spot

Valve has released a minor Counter-Strike 2 update that, despite its size, resolves one of the most-discussed bugs of recent weeks and continues polishing Cache a month on from its return to Active Duty.

The end of ghost grenades

The patch's most important line sits in the gameplay section: a case where grenades could be thrown through level geometry has been fixed.

It's the answer to the bug the community discovered a few weeks ago, which allowed grenades under certain conditions to pass through walls and solid surfaces instead of bouncing off them. Valve never publicly commented on the matter at the time, so the fix arrives with no advance notice — as is usually the case.

The competitive impact is obvious: any exploit letting players place utility where the game shouldn't allow it is sensitive material in an environment where one misplaced smoke or molotov decides rounds. With the circuit entering its most demanding stretch — the Esports World Cup starts in under a week — the patch's timing is no accident.

Cache is still under construction

The map recently reinstated in the competitive pool receives another round of fixes, the latest of many since its return. Valve has fixed various gaps in the map, adjusted collision in several spots, and fixed flickering on some assets.

But the change players will care about is a different one: a boost spot in Outside A has been removed. That's a modification with direct effect on playable positions, the kind that forces you to revisit routines you've already learned, so it's worth keeping in mind before your next Premier game.

Outside the official pool, community map Shelter has been updated to its latest Workshop version.

A gift for map creators

The patch's bulkiest section will go unnoticed by most, but it's significant news for the creator community: Valve has substantially expanded the map scripting API.

Highlights include full access to the planted C4 — you can now query which site it's on, who planted it, who's defusing it, and the plant, explode, defuse-start, and defuse-finish times — along with control over grenade projectiles: identifying their type, knowing who threw them, and even forcing detonation. There are also new functions to spawn grenades via script, detect weapon pickups, trace players, and react to the bomb exploding, plus the CSGrenadeType enum and extra data in the grenade bounce and weapon drop events.

Translated: the custom game modes the community has been building since Valve introduced the scripting system gain considerable room to maneuver. Anyone following that scene has plenty here to experiment with.

A lukewarm reception

One detail that says something about the current mood: the update has drawn around 81% approval on Steam (roughly 3,950 upvotes against 930 downvotes), noticeably below the average for recent patches, which had been running between 85% and 90%.

The reason isn't hard to guess. With the community waiting months for meaningful news — starting with the anti-cheat — a patch of minor fixes, however useful, isn't enough to lift the general mood.
