Bounty arrives in Malta: Liquid vs Spirit opens a LAN with no safety net

Bounty arrives in Malta: Liquid vs Spirit opens a LAN with no safety net

There's nowhere left to hide. The offline stage of BLAST Bounty 2026 Season 2 begins today at the BLAST Arena Studios in Malta with eight teams, single elimination, and no second chances through August 2. And last night's draft produced a bracket with a marquee opening match: Liquid against Spirit.

The four quarter-final matchups are set:

  • Liquid vs Spirit
  • FaZe vs The MongolZ
  • 3DMAX vs MOUZ
  • paiN vs Astralis

Quarter-finals and semi-finals are best-of-three, with a best-of-five grand final.

Liquid punished for arriving last

The tournament format keeps its signature quirk: lower-seeded teams pick their opponents. The pick order was paiN, FaZe, 3DMAX, and Liquid — meaning the Americans, choosing last, had no room to maneuver: only Spirit was left on the board. Their IGL, Viktor "flashie" Tamás Bea, wasn't surprised; it was the scenario they'd anticipated.

It's an almost cruel outcome. Liquid have been the online stage's big story precisely because of their performance — 2-0 over Vitality and 2-0 over G2 in Johnny "JT" Theodosiou's debut as in-game leader, alongside Georgi "Jorko" Mitev, an AWPer with no top-level experience — and that strong showing is exactly what placed them high in the pick order and left them without a choice. Their reward for two upsets is facing the tournament's most feared team in their first match.

The picks that could be made

FaZe went for The MongolZ with two clear arguments: the extra preparation day that matchup gave them, and the importance of VRS points, since the Mongolian side sits just above them in the rankings. From the other camp, Niclas "enkay J" Krumhorn played down the absence of Erdenedalai "maaRaa" Bayanbat, insisting it wasn't a factor, while Sodbayar "Techno" Munkhbold raised an interesting point: their newcomers might play with more freedom precisely because they aren't carrying the pressure.

3DMAX faced the trickiest call, left with MOUZ and favorites Spirit. They chose the Germans, and Damien "wasiNk" Dufour explained why without hedging: he acknowledged they could have fancied their chances against Spirit, but the map pool weighed heavily, and he'd wanted this matchup since day one, feeling it was the perfect moment to take it.

paiN, picking first, were left with Astralis, who arrive with Filip "NEO" Kubski making his debut on the bench.

A tournament with the elite missing

It's worth recalling the context that makes this LAN so unusual: Spirit are the only top-10 team present. The online stage swallowed Falcons, Vitality, FURIA, Aurora, and G2, leaving MOUZ — eleventh in the rankings — as the bracket's second-highest seed.

That makes donk's side favorites with an unusually large cushion, something reflected even in the tournament's fantasy game, where the Russian is by far the most expensive player ($250,000) and still among the most selected. But it also means whoever takes down Spirit will have a clear path to a top-tier title.

With $1,150,000 on the line and the bounty system rewarding upsets, the question for these four days is simple: will the last giant standing hold, or will Bounty claim one final victim?
