New CS2 patch: the bomb explosion now interacts with smokes and molotovs

New CS2 patch: the bomb explosion now interacts with smokes and molotovs

Valve released a minor Counter-Strike 2 update overnight (1:13 AM CEST on July 21) that, once again, focuses on the C4 explosion redesign introduced with Season 5. That's three consecutive updates polishing the same mechanic.

Gameplay: the C4 takes center stage again

Two changes, both with real impact on save rounds:

The bomb damage preview is now displayed when the bomb becomes audible. This is an important timing adjustment: until now it wasn't clear at what point the indicator telling you whether you'll survive the detonation would appear. It's now tied to the moment you can hear the bomb, giving a consistent basis for deciding whether to save your weapon or go for the retake.

The bomb explosion now interacts with smoke grenade clouds and with fire from incendiaries or molotovs. This is the change with the most tactical upside: the shockwave no longer sweeps across the map ignoring utility, but interacts with it. We'll have to see in practice how much a well-placed smoke alters the explosion's outcome, but it opens up possibilities in the closing seconds of a round that simply didn't exist before.

Maps and miscellaneous

On the map front, Fachwerk, Boulder, and Debris have been updated to their latest versions available on the community Workshop, with their respective change notes linked from the official announcement.

The rest are Steam China-specific additions: a Workshop maps section has been added to the "Play" menu, along with a shortcut to the community server list in that same menu.

Quick take

Nothing revolutionary, but telling nonetheless. With three straight patches devoted to the same mechanic, it's clear Valve treats the C4 redesign as an ongoing project rather than a finished feature. And the timing is no accident: BLAST Bounty begins today, the circuit's first major tournament with the seven-map pool and the new explosion, so the pros will be trying these tweaks essentially fresh out of the oven.
